Mail Call

"Most fire department training is done under the auspices of the University of Maryland, which requires strict safety standards be met. The old railroad station would not meet these requirements. You want to train firefighters, not kill them. Volunteers are valuable."

- Hagerstown

"Bypass: Anyone voting yes for this project has a too-close relationship with land developers. Interstates' purpose is for travelers to bypass the towns. Add another lane to the interstates. Do not create a road to go right through the countryside, but brilliant for those with mindset of 'Let's develop the land and have a bunch more subdivisions around this new road.' ... I hope this never comes to fruition. We have to stand up against the fleecing of this county."

- Hagerstown

"Did we think maybe we could save a little money by cutting back on our personal use of water, sewer and electricity? Wrong. It looks like the less we use, the more we're going to be charged for it. Instead of these companies cutting back like the rest of us, they seem to expect those who use less to pay more, in order to support their whole budget. Sooo, if you use less electricity, less water and sewer, they'll just raise your rates in order to maintain their present budgets and spending standards."

"To the caller from Hagerstown about Waynesboro caller: Yes, obviously, most know ultra-liberal Democrats and conservative Republicans. Bush was removed from office by practicing the liberal spend, spend and spend rivaling same from past Democrats. If you open the floodgates, that puts the lowest houses under water. You do not open the gates more to save the higher-elevated houses. Likewise, you do not quadruple what Bush did in eight years and not blame Obama for what he has done in less than one year."

- Martinsburg, W.Va.

"Would all you parents with small kids please give them lots of attention, so when they grow up they won't have to put all the windows down on their cars and play the radio or CD players as loud as they go, so they get the attention that their mommies didn't give them?"

- Boonsboro

"I'd like to tell everybody about our wonderful chorus director. I sing in the ... chorus in Hagerstown, Md., and our chorus director, Dave, he is an excellent guy. He's really friendly, he's happy-go-lucky and he does such a great job leading the barbershop chorus. So, Dave, I'd like to say a special thank you from one of the many members. ... Keep up the good work."

- Hagerstown

"If the Obama administration and Homeland Security would just pay a little bit of attention to Jack Bauer, I think a lot of our terrorism problems would be solved."

- Hagerstown

"Now that the warm weather's back, so are ant problems. If you have an area plagued by ants where you don't want to use insecticide - and I know this sounds a little odd - I found that sprinkling cinnamon or black pepper in a thick line really seems to repel them. Maybe other spices will also work, but I've only tried those. I don't know if it's the smell or what, and it'll never replace insecticide, but it works well for me where I don't think insecticide is safe to use."

- Frederick, Md.

"Teach your kids not to lie. Leave it up to the government."

- Hagerstown

"Sitting here wondering, were West Virginia governor Joe Manchin and ex-Washington Redskins quarterback Joe Theismann possibly separated at birth? Just inquiring."

- Funkstown

"I'm calling from Martinsburg, W.Va., where we do subscribe to your newspaper. I'm very, very disappointed in the paper on Wednesday, April 7, did not have the story on the front page about the mining disaster. That was on page 6, and on the front page, it was 'Killer gets life in prison' and 'Woman's body found.' That's not news. That's nothing. I'm disappointed that you didn't put the mining disaster on the front page."

- Martinsburg, W.Va.

"The news media has dropped the ball again. The TV talking heads and newspapers are taking great delight in reporting about Christian militia group, the Hutarees. News media, please take notice. A Christian is defined biblically and secularly as a follower of Christ, not a militia."

- Martinsburg, W.Va.

"It's all over the news lately that 47 percent of the people in the U.S. do not pay taxes. They're exempt, due to exemptions on their tax forms or they don't make enough money or they claim certain losses. So it's almost 50/50, half of the people in the U.S. are the taxpaying and the other half are not paying any taxes at all. I think that's ridiculous. It's time to have a flat tax. I think that we need to have a vote on that, a national vote, have a national sales tax. That way everybody pays, regardless of how much money you make."

- Williamsport
