Mail Call

April 12, 2010

"I was reading the article about counting prisoners in the census. I'd like to know why Washington County or any other area that has prisons can't count them for the state of Maryland or the county, when they reside in the county at that time. They live here - even though it's in a prison - and they get their food, they get their medical supplies. You know, I think we - it's only fair that the county should count them."

- Hagerstown

"I'm calling about the article from Big Pool. The longer census form figures are used to help manufacturing industries, on how many new plumbing fixtures, etc., will be needed in the next 10 years. Times to leave for work: That judges volumes of traffic at specific times, to help in expanding roads, etc."

- Hagerstown

"Tuesday, April 6, front page in the newspaper: Funkstown has not returned their census. We do not get the census in the mail because we do not have mail delivery. I know 20 people on my street that are retired or are home all day long. No one that I've spoken to has gotten a census. They're supposed to come to our house and give us one. They haven't done it. So don't bash Funkstown for not turning them in because you can't turn in something you haven't received."

"I see they have a sneaky way of raising our taxes, by increasing the water bill. It's a good thing the Potomac River water's free because I don't know we'd pay for water if we had to pay for the water. The only thing we're having to pay for is the help in pumping the water. So I don't see where they get all these increases on the water bill increase for ... It's a different way of collecting taxes."

"I was just getting ready to buy the paper, The Herald-Mail, for April 6, until I saw who was on the front cover. He threw out the first pitch for a baseball team in Washington, the Nationals. You ever heard of the curse of the Bambino - he's the curse of the U.S. So it'll be surprising if the Nationals even win a game, him throwing the first pitch out. And it's surprising to see he's in D.C. He's never hardly there. He's always traveling around to other countries."

- Berkeley Springs, W.Va.

"This is in response to everyone that is complaining about their utility rates; water, sewer, electric, and so on - which I'm sure is everybody in the county that's not locked up in jail. That's my point. The correctional institutions south of Hagerstown, all those inmates, they have totally unrestricted use of their electric, and of course, their water. Now my question's this: Who's paying their bills? And the answer is: You and I, the taxpayers. Yet there are no restrictions on anything these fellas do, and it's a darn shame."

"For all the people that called this winter, scoffing at global warming theories, what do you think about now, with the temperature over the 90s, over 25 degrees warmer than it should be? Global warming climate change is the real reason, and it is happening. You need to be concerned about it."

"I'm a resident of Maugansville, Md. It's been three days to five days that I haven't got any mail. I know I have outstanding bills due. The mail is never there on time or usually doesn't come at all."

- Maugansville

"I just wanted to call and comment that I agree with the people complaining about barking dogs. It is such a nuisance and is very insane, and the people off of Rosewood Drive, all the several people who have dogs barking and barking, they are very inconsiderate ... and I just can't believe that there's people that can stand to hear these dogs barking constantly."

- Halfway

"Please correct the errant reporting about the Tea Party in D.C. The park police later confirmed there was not - I repeat, not one arrest. No one has yet produced video of a racial incident and the senator has since said publicly that he never reported one. There were 40,000 law-abiding, decent people peacefully exercising their First Amendment right."

- Hagerstown

"I'm calling about the census. I called about two weeks ago. I received a postcard that if I had not received the census, call this number, and I called the number that was on the card. I got a recording telling me to put the number underneath the bar code of the census so they could recompute my request. Well, without a census form, I did not have the bar code. When I did not have the bar code and couldn't respond ... they could not help me at this time."

- Falling Waters, W.Va.

"I would like to suggest that new Eastern Primary school be named after Haven Hoffman. She did so much in this area for the children at Christmastime and it would just be so fitting to name that school after her."

- Hagerstown

"It's 90-plus degrees in the first of April. Where are your ... Al Gore jokes now?"

- Hagerstown
