Everyone in act for Hubs

April 11, 2010|By ANDREW MASON

SMITHSBURG -- North Hagerstown is proving there's much more to its girls track and field team than superstar sprinters Katie Ritter and Renee Phillips.

Due to a commitment with her future school, Seton Hall University, Ritter was absent from the annual Heurich Invitational on Saturday, while Phillips was limited to just a pair of relays because she spent the first part of the day taking the ACT test.

The Hubs still thumped everyone, racking up a winning total of 139 points. Host Smithsburg held off South Hagerstown 68-61.5 for second.

"I guess that shows that we have a lot of depth," said North junior Beth Wagner, who's become a star herself.

Wagner won both the 100-meter hurdles (15.88 seconds) and 300 hurdles (50.00), placed second in the high jump (5 feet) and contributed to the Hubs' second-place 4x400 relay (4:23.63).

"I was so ecstatic with my 100 hurdles. I PR'd by three-quarters of a second," she said. "I was out this week with an injury --I pulled a muscle in my butt -- so maybe the rest helped."

The Hubs also got a pair of wins from Amber Elliott in the long jump (16-2 3/4) and triple jump (34-2 1/4).

"I just try to support the team as much as possible," Elliott said. "I don't give up."

Alison Harrell won the 3,200 by nearly a minute in 12:01.63 for North, which also won the 4x100 (50.79) and 4x200 (1:49.33).

"Next month is what we're focused on," Hubs coach Robert Waugh said. "But it's a great feeling to come out here and do as well as we did today."

In the dashes, Boonsboro freshman Abby Duncan continued to impress, winning both the 100 (12.66) and 200 (26.57).

"I'm a soccer player and a basketball player," said Duncan, who also is one of area's top sprinters now.

"I'm really proud of myself for the stuff I've done so far in such little time," she said. "And there's time for improvement."

Clear Spring's Paige Shirk won the shot put (39-6 1/2) and finished second in the discus (107-7), while South's La'Kesa McClain won the discus (115-2) and took second in the shot put (35-2).

Smithsburg's Jonelle Jerwick won the pole vault (9-0).
