HAGERSTOWN -- When it comes to mind games, nobody beats Boonsboro High School.

Other students tried, answering questions that tested a broad area of knowledge.

For instance, what is the next number in this sequence -- 2, 6, 14, 30?

Or how about this one?

What American folk singer wrote "This Land is Your Land"?

Questions in history, literature, science, math and current events were part of the 14th annual High School Academic Team Competition held Saturday morning at E. Russell Hicks Middle School.

Teams of students from Boonsboro, Clear Spring, Hancock, North Hagerstown, Smithsburg, South Hagerstown, Washington County Technical and Williamsport high schools used speed, a little risk taking and a lot of brain power in a contest modeled after the quiz show "It's Academic."

When the final buzzer sounded, Boonsboro High School captured first place, winning a trophy and $500 in scholarship money.

Taking second place was Williamsport High School, which received a trophy and $300 in scholarships.

South High placed third and Smithsburg placed fourth, each receiving trophies and $150.

The Hagerstown Trust Division of the Columbia Bank donated $1,500 for the scholarship awards and the Washington County Teachers Association donated $100.

Clear Spring High School, the top scoring nonfinalist, received $550 from the Hagerstown Community College Foundation.

All teams received at least a $100 scholarship.

Katrina Bushko, a member of the winning Boonsboro team, said the group practiced about two hours every week before the competition.

"The whole experience was a lot of fun," she said.

Now, the team heads back to school Monday with trophy in hand and a little status on campus.

"We're celebrity nerds," she joked.

By the way, the answer to the sequence problem is 62 and Woody Guthrie wrote "This Land is Your Land."
