INWOOD, W.Va. - Norman W. Karlen, 96, of Inwood, W.Va., formerly of Helvetia, W.Va., died Sunday March 7, 2010, at the VA Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born Oct. 3, 1913, in Helvetia, he was the son of the late John and Emma Rush Karlen. Norman was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

He was a member of the Helvetia Zion Presbyterian Church. Norman attended Haslebacher Elementary School in 1929; served in the U.S. Army during World War II, European Theater; and retired from the West Virginia Division of Highways, Pickens, W.Va. He was a lifetime member of the VFW, and member of Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s.


He is survived by one son, Steven and wife Mary Ann of Charles Town, W.Va., two grandsons, Darrell and wife Ginny of Frederick, Md., and Geoffrey and wife AnnMarie of Hagerstown, Md.; and five great-grandchildren, Adam, Brent, Nicholas, Natalie and Alex.

In addition to his parents and siblings, he was preceded in death by first wife, Viola Tenney, and second wife, Martha Odell Cutright.

A memorial service will be Saturday, May 8, 2010, at 1 p.m. at the Helvetia Zion Presbyterian Church, Helvetia, W.Va., with the Rev. Robert F. Heavner officiating.
