GREENCASTLE, Pa. -- Pancakes and bingo will kickoff a series of fundraising events this year by the Greencastle Rescue Hose Co. to help purchase a new rescue squad vehicle.

The Rescue Hose Co. plans to replace its 1990 rescue squad vehicle this spring with a new $650,000 model.

Officers of the company will go to Wisconsin this spring to arrange for delivery of the vehicle, said Special Fundraising Chairman Robbie Mellott.

In the meantime, the company needs to raise about $300,000 to cover the remaining cost of the vehicle, he said.

The rescue squad vehicle is a vital part of the company's operation, Mellott said.

Housing equipment for every possible situation, including the jaws of life, rope, hoses, chains and more, the vehicle travels to the scene of most fires and accidents, he said.

"It's like a big tool box on wheels," he said. "It has everything we need to do our job."

Rescue squad vehicles typically last about 15 to 20 years, so it was time to replace the Rescue Hose Co.'s vehicle, Mellott said.

The company has raised about half the purchase price of the vehicle, he said.

To raise the rest, a number of fundraisers are planned for 2010.

Starting Saturday at 5:30 a.m., the company will host an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast, he said.

Carryout is available and breakfast will be served until 10:30 a.m., Mellott said.

Breakfast will include pancakes, sausage, bacon, scrambled eggs, toast, breakfast fries, fruit bowl, orange juice and coffee, he said.

A night of bingo is also planned this month to help raise money for the vehicle, Mellott said.

On Sunday April 25, the company will host a Pandora and Vera Bradley bingo.

The cost is $25 per player.

Each player will receive a game pack that includes multiple bingo cards, Mellott said.

The Rescue Hose Co. purchased all the prize items for the bingo.

Both events will be hosted at the company's Special Events Center at 407 S. Washington St. in Greencastle.
