Hawks' Shafer no-hits Rockville in 9-1 win

ROCKVILLE, Md. -- Jay Shafer pitched a no-hitter with eight strikeouts and no walks in Hagerstown Community College's 9-1 victory over Montgomery County-Rockville on Thursday.

Rockville was able to plate the first run of the game in the first inning, taking advantage of several HCC errors and a hit batter, but Shafer (4-1) and the Hawks defense settled in and cruised the rest of the way.

Justin Martinez had three hits and two RBIs for the Hawks (20-7), while Jordan Thurber hit a two-run double.

Shepherd 12-14, Elizabeth City 6-9

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Shepherd earned a doubleheader sweep of visiting Elizabeth City State (15-15) with a combined 26 runs and 28 hits.

Tyler Beard went 4-for-4 with a homer and five RBIs in the opener for Shepherd, while Tyler McCain had a home run and drove in four, Derek Gunsell added three hits and Nathan Minnich and Jake Cook had two hits apiece.

Minnich provided the Rams' firepower in the nightcap with three home runs and six RBIs. Chris Szafran and Pat Aragon each went 3-for-4 for Shepherd (13-16).

Southwest Edgecomb 15, Goretti 5

TARBORO, N.C. -- Nic Martin had three hits and Aaron Wilkinson had two hits and two RBIs for St. Maria Goretti in the loss to Southwest Edgecomb at the Tarboro Tournament.

The Gaels (2-7) began the tourney with an 8-0 loss to host Tarboro on Wednesday. Jay Donoghue had Goretti's only two hits, both doubles.

Red Land 7, Chambersburg 6

LEWISBERRY, Pa. -- Garrett Sanders had two hits, including a two-run homer, for Chambersburg, which gave up the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning in its loss to Red Land.

Jordan Riley, Andrew Byers and Zane Bard had two hits each for the Trojans (0-2).

Chris Payne (3-1) took the loss for the Cougars (9-3), allowing five earned runs on nine hits while striking out six in a complete-game effort.

Greencastle-JB suspended

GREENCASTLE, Pa. -- The game between Greencastle and James Buchanan on Thursday was suspended in the bottom of the fourth inning due to rain with Greencastle leading 7-0.

The game is tentatively rescheduled to be completed on April 28.

COVE, Pa. -- Emily Masters led Waynesboro with a double, a triple and three RBIs as the Maidens remained undefeated after shutting out Susquenita.

Dani Miller, Erin Lisko and Hillary Rowe each had two hits, Meghan Decker hit a two-run triple and Kelsea Decker pitched a three-hitter for Waynesboro (6-0).
