Mail Call

April 09, 2010

"As we were riding up through Sideling Hill Easter Sunday, we passed by the closed rest stop, and what a shame. Something as nice as that is totally shut down, with gates across it. If the state of Maryland cannot afford to keep it open, why don't they sell it to someone who could make a restaurant or a motel there, that would simply be beautiful? Even put a lighted walkway in, with a few benches."

- Greencastle, Pa.

"This is a suggestion for the county commissioners and the Hagerstown council. Build the new library on the Massey parking lot. Tear down the old Massey body shop and build the new senior center there. Use the current or old library, what will become the old library building for Discovery Station or an arts and entertainment. Just think what that would do for downtown."

- Hagerstown

"I certainly believe the Sunday Lifestyle photo, April 4, 2010, could have shown a better-looking photo for Easter than the salamanders. With the beautiful trees all in bloom and the wonderful flowers everywhere, who wants to look at spotted things that look like snakes with legs? Some other Sunday would have been better."

"I had to respond to the person from Williamsport who's saying that the Orioles have no pitching and they're going to be last in the division. Yeah, we might be ... last ... but we can have some very good young arms. One, Brian Matusz, who most experts are saying will be the rookie of the year in the American League. ... The Orioles are in rebuilding, we have some great youth, and in another year or two, we will be contending with the Red Sox and the Yankees, but we're doing it right this way."

"Boonsboro caller, in your adoration of him, apparently you haven't noticed that just like the Bush administration, President Obama is also, in your words 'hurting people with bombs and tanks and guns,' in Iraq and Afghanistan, and I commend him for it, to the extent that he has, continuing President Bush's policies in the war on terror."

- Frederick, Md.

"OK, it was in the paper the other day about our lights and water and sewer going up, and you could have fooled me, because I thought they already did."

- Hagerstown

"What is a way to get rid of stink bugs naturally, like can you use vinegar? I don't want to use any pesticides in my home. I just wondering, something natural like vinegar or something like that. If someone could call in to the Mail Call with that it'd be appreciated."

- Hagerstown

"I'm commenting on an article I read a couple weeks ago about Boonsboro High opening in 1961. It had to open in September of 1959, because we were the first graduating class, and we graduated in 1960."

- Keedysville

"I'm calling about the Justice law that was in today's paper. Reading this article, it just amazes me that out of all the people down there, the delegates and stuff and the judiciary committee, that one man has the power to stop that from going to the table for a vote. ... I think all laws should hit the table, whether they get passed or not. All laws should hit the table."

- Hagerstown

"This is to the county commissioners of Washington County. What do you think you're commissioners of, Baltimore County, Montgomery, Prince George's, where there's industry, where there's money to be drawn off the people? This is Washington County. We and Allegany County share one thing: Low incomes and no industry to support this, the tax that you want to put on us, as far as property. When are you going to understand that we are not a rich county?"

- Washington County

"This is to the Clear Spring caller from last week that had their house up for sale but were threatening to have prospective home buyers arrested for trespassing. What boat did you fall off of? Either you want to sell your house or you don't. You should welcome any prospective buyers into your property with open arms."

- Williamsport

"About this health bill that got passed, I used to pay $20.79 for eight prescriptions. I am still paying $93 a month for insurance. I have Medicare A, B and D, and now I have gone, with the very same medicine, gone from $20.79 a month to $120. Such a nice health care bill, huh?"

- Falling Waters, W.Va.

"They say that Jesse James robbed the rich and gave to the poor. I'm calling because it seems like our elected officials and politicians are robbing the poor and pocketing the money."

- Hagerstown

"The new road that's supposed to alleviate traffic problems there at the YMCA ... it makes me wonder who ... made two left-hand turn lanes coming into Hagerstown off of the Leitersburg Pike onto Eastern Boulevard. That creates total confusion for some people, and a race to see who's going to get from two lanes to one lane, ahead of the other person. This is a real fiasco."
