Mail Call

April 08, 2010

"I'd like to know who is responsible for the condition of Scenic View Court in Boonsboro. Is the town of Boonsboro, or Washington County? Whoever it is, they need to come out here and talk to the neighbors and tell them why they destroyed our street."

- Boonsboro

"SSI is not welfare. It is Social Security that is paid to the minor, that the parent has died and has worked and paid in to the system. It is not welfare. It's to try and help keep the child alive, survive, with no income from the parent. Get your facts straight next time."

- Hagerstown

"It is not George Bush or President Obama's fault that the gasoline prices are going up. If you would listen to the news on TV, you would know that it is China's demand for crude oil that is causing the prices to go up. If you want to blame somebody, blame China."

"In reference to A6, on the restaurant inspections on the 4th in the paper, great work, Health Department and Herald-Mail, for publishing that. I belong to a couple of the clubs that were in there, and I eat there regularly. I'm sad to say that what they're doing, the cleanliness and temperatures and all this others is uncalled for. Thank you for doing it. ... Thank God our health department's on top of it."

- Chewsville

"I'm not trying to alarm anyone, but I think our country is being taken over by stink bugs, and the reason I'm saying this, I saw one in a restaurant where I was eating Saturday, and this stink bug was promptly escorted to the door by the manager, and then also Sunday there was one in church, and that's not too bad, because I can say more for him than I can other people. They didn't make it to church."

- Sharpsburg

"I don't have a computer to reply to the 'What do you think?' question, but I think this: The post office should deliver mail on Saturday. I'm tired of hearing how broke they are. If they can build a $40 million building, they can deliver mail on Saturday."

- Falling Waters, W.Va.

"We continue to hear the desperate prattlings of those who support the health care devastation act. They always quote mortality rates as their standard. If you really want a more relevant measure of health care success or failure, look at life expectancy after diagnosis of life-threatening illness or traumatic event."

- Smithsburg

"To the caller from Boonsboro: You conveniently forgot 9/11, in George Bush's first term."

- Boonsboro

"To the Williamsport caller complaining about the new senior site at the HCC campus: Friend, you do not speak for me, or all seniors. Robinwood is not a wilderness, and it does have regular bus service. It's not as bad as trying to reach the present center, going up Franklin Street during the day - what a mess. My senior friends and I love the beauty of the HCC campus and can't wait for it. ... Thank you, county commissioners, for our senior center."

- Hagerstown

"My comment is in reference to the piece in Saturday's paper, April 3. The cops do not have to chase people. ... These car chases have got to stop. I don't care if it's Pennsylvania, Maryland, or what. That was a totally unnecessary chase. Now we have two injured children, which was not supposed to happen - all because there was no car seats. I can understand the need for safety of the children, but he put their lives in danger."

- Hancock

"I want to thank whoever put the cross up along the towpath near Clear Spring. What a nice surprise."

- Hancock

"I was just wondering what the Piranha Club is supposed to be, and I was wondering if anyone else finds it as disgusting as my family does. And just wanted to also say the call-in regarding the legislating the poor into freedom by legislating the wealthy out of freedom was really one of the better Mail Calls I've seen."

- Falling Waters, W.Va.

"Has anyone noticed how the governor of Maryland is taking away from hardworking people, and then turning around and taking that money and spending it on projects like the new Maryland police barracks? I think it's time that he either goes, or we get our money back. Give back to the hardworking people that you took from, then see if you can build a barrack. You don't waste money on something you don't need."

- Hagerstown
