ADAMSTOWN, Md. - Mary Louise Gutches, 79, of Adamstown, Md., and formerly of Smithsburg, Md., passed away peacefully Easter morning, surrounded by her family.

Born Oct. 17, 1930, in Annapolis, Md., she was the daughter of the late William Frederick Flood Sr. and Suzanne Louise (Chance) Flood.

She was a 1952 graduate of Immaculata College, with a B.A. degree.

She was employed by social services of Washington County, Md., Anne Arundel County, Md., and Cook County, Ill., and was also a service club director for Army Special Services in Germany.


She was a member of St. Anne's Catholic Church of Hagerstown, Md., St. John the Evangelist of North Naples, Fla., St. Joseph on Carrollton Manor Catholic Church of Buckeystown, Md., and Green Acres Homemaker Club of Hagerstown, and was a Girl Scouts leader for various groups.

She is survived by and will be missed by her husband of 48 years, George A. Gutches Jr., whom she married July 8, 1961; daughters Marie Erb-Gutches and Beth Nickerson; grandchildren Ayla and Silas, and many family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her son, George A. "Drew" Gutches III, and brother, William F. Flood Jr.

A memorial Mass will be held Wednesday, April 14, 2010 at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph on Carrollton Manor, 5843 Manor Woods Road, Buckeystown, MD 21717, with Father Lawrence Frazier officiating.

Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family. A reception will follow the service.
