Smithsburg volunteer firefighter earns gold medal of valor

o Firefighter hailed for effort to save a life

David Yankey, a volunteer firefighter for Smithsburg Community Volunteer Fire Co. and a paid firefighter in Montgomery County, Md., received the gold medal of valor in March at the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce's Public Safety Awards ceremony, according to the Chamber's Web site.

Yankey received the honor for his attempt to save a woman's life last August, going into a burning house in northern Frederick County, Md., without backup or breathing apparatus. Yankey was able to get the woman out of the house, but she did not survive.

This is the 14th time a gold medal of valor has been awarded in 36 years, according to http://www.montgomerycountychamber.com.

Presenting the award was Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Services Chief Richard Bowers.
