Clarence Melvin "Tuck" Koontz, 79, of 35 S. Colonial Drive, Hagerstown, Md., went to be with the Lord, surrounded by family and friends following a brief illness, Sunday, April 4, 2010, at the Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown.

Born Sunday, Aug. 17, 1930, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Charles Koontz and the late Goldie Smith Koontz, and his aunt Cora Caton, who raised him.

He was a 1949 graduate of Hagerstown High School. He was employed with the Noland Co. as an electrical salesman for over 50 years, retiring in February 2000. Clarence was a veteran of the Korean War serving in the U.S. Army.

He was a charter member of Christ Community Church. He was a member of the B.P.O. Elks 378, Eagles Inc. of Waynesboro, Waynesboro Moose Lodge 814, life member of VFW Post 1936, member of the Morris Frock American Legion Post 42, AMVETS Post 10, Red Men Tribe 84, North American Rod & Gun Club, Goodwill Athletic Club, NRA and was the last surviving charter member of the West End Lions Club. Many knew Clarence by his CB handle "Greasy Belly."


Clarence had been a REACH Cold Weather Shelter volunteer and staff member for many years, and while there touched the lives of many homeless men and women. Clarence loved his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and shared that love with everyone he encountered.

He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Mary Lou Koontz; one daughter, Shirley Bussard and husband Jim of Williamsport, Md.; one son, Clarence M. Koontz Jr. and companion Dana of Hagerstown; two brothers, Jack W. Koontz and wife Peggy of Williamsport, and Charles H. Koontz and wife Helen of Hagerstown; four grandchildren, Jimmy Bussard, Jenna Bussard, Melissa Koontz and Robin Shafer; and great-grandchild, Hailey Koontz.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Leon Koontz.

Services will be held Wednesday, April 7, 2010, at 10 a.m. at the Willowbrook Seventh-day Adventist Church, 8916 Mapleville Road, Boonsboro, Md., with Pastor Rich Carr, Pastor Mark Benz and Pastor Clarence Horst officiating.

Family will receive friends at the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown, from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 6.

Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown.
