What Do You Think?

April 06, 2010

The question posted Friday on The Herald-Mail's Web site was: Would you support a transportation group's proposal to study a bypass that would connect Interstates 81 and 70 in Washington County?

Poll results:

Yes: 391 votes (44 percent)

No: 493 votes (56 percent)

"One of the worst ideas in a long time. Replace existing functioning farms with sprawl. This is a proposal only a developer could support. Who came up with this idea? How did it end up in the plan?"

"It's about time. This will ease traffic on Dual Highway and Eastern Boulevard."

"I support a smaller bypass, one that would link Edgewood Drive to the Longmeadow Road/Leitersburg Pike vicinity and widen Longmeadow Road, which in turn links up with Maugans Avenue. This would give emergency personnel a faster transit time to the new hospital being built. ... A bypass on a scale such as this would be so nice."

"Yes. If this leads to jobs and alleviation of traffic congestion at certain places within the county, I feel it would be an asset. It probably will need to be done in the future anyway, so why not save money and do it now when it will be cheaper and unemployment is more than 11 percent."

"Interstates 81 and 70 are already connected. ... If the road taxes would not have been squandered, the interstates would have been expanded with more lanes and updated years ago. I think we should take care of the roads we have, which are being neglected, before we build any more."

"Building a bypass seldom solves traffic problems. It just relocates them temporarily. Don't believe it? Look around. Just take a gander at Eastern Boulevard. I would go for this only if the adjacent properties could never be developed."

"Wouldn't a third lane on Interstates 81 and 70 and improving existing roads help ease congestion and be a lot cheaper to do than this proposed bypass? ... I would like to see improvements done on existing roads in the county ... before starting a major project like this."
