Richards earns win at Speedway

April 05, 2010

HAGERSTOWN -- Josh Richards picked up where he left off Saturday by taking the season-opening late model points race at Hagerstown Speedway.

Richards, of Shinstown, W.Va., started his World of Outlaws title defense by winning while driving his new Ernie Davis Ford-powered Rocket to victory lane.

In other events, Ashley Barrett, of Shippensburg, Pa., led the final two laps to win the Hoosier Tire Mid Atlantic late model sportsman race and Mike Warrenfeltz, of Hagerstown, began his Ernie D's pure stock championship defense with his 75th career victory. Kenny Thomas, of Keedysville, won the 30-lap Enduro Dash.

Richards won a battle with Frankie Plessinger and took over the lead on the 16th lap before pulling away to a 1.28 second victory.

Barrett broke loose from a four-way battle for the lead and took control in the 19th lap, beating Glenn Elliott and Michael Collins to the finish line by one second.

Warrenfeltz bolted to the lead after starting on the outside of the front row. He led by as much at 1.47 seconds, but settled for a victory by a .72-second margin over Wayne Hawbaker.

Thomas copied Warrenfeltz's plan as he also jumped to the lead from the outside front row and went on for a half-lap victory over a tight pack consisting of William Crook, Chris Ebersole, Kenny Thomas and Mark Vegh.
