National Public Health Week begins today

FREDERICK, Md. - The Frederick County Health Department announces that April 5 to 11, is National Public Health Week. For more than a decade, communities around the country have celebrated National Public Health Week (NPHW) each April to help protect and improve our nation's health.

This year, the 2010 theme is "A Healthier America: One Community at a Time."

During NPHW the FCHD will host H1N1 and seasonal influenza vaccination clinics. There is no charge for the H1N1 vaccine.

The seasonal flu vaccine is available at a cost of $20. At this time, the Health Department does not have seasonal FluMist vaccine available. H1N1 and seasonal flu vaccine will be available during the following dates and times on a walk-in basis.

  • Today, 1:30 to 4 p.m.

  • Tuesday, April 6, 1:30 to 4 p.m.

  • Thursday, April 8, 1:30 to 5 p.m.

  • Friday, April 9, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

    On Wednesday, April 7, vaccinations will also be available for zostavax, Tdap, Hepatitis B and others. These vaccines are available by appointment, and there is a cost associated with each vaccine.

Screenings for stroke, artery disease offered

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Screenings for stroke and carotid artery disease, peripheral arterial disease and abdominal aortic aneurysm will be held on Saturday, April 17, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at South Central Surgical Associates office located at Summit Health Center, 757 Norland Ave., Suite 104, Chambersburg. The three screenings are being offered by South Central Surgical Associates, an affiliate of Summit Health. The cost will be $60 for all three screenings or $25 for one.

People older than 40 with risk factors or symptoms could benefit from these preventative health screenings.

Fat facts about heart health eating

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Morgan County War Memorial Hospital's Center for Rehab & Wellness, 261 Berkmore Place, Suite 2A, will offer a free presentation "Fat Facts for Heart Healthy Eating" at 4:30 p.m. Monday, April 19.

Sara Kuykendall, a registered and licensed dietitian, will discuss which fats are best for your heart health. Class size is limited.

Seminar to highlight health care careers

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - A free seminar, "Steps to a Healthcare Career," will take place from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 26, at Chambersburg Hospital Lecture Center, 112 N. Seventh St.; and from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 27, at Waynesboro Hospital's Main Conference Room, 501 E. Main St., Waynesboro, Pa.
