WESTMINSTER, Md. - The Rev. Dr. Ernest H. Baker Sr., 87, of Westminster, Md., died March 31, 2010, after an extended illness.

He was born Oct. 24, 1922, at South Mountain, Pa., to Howard E. and Gertrude (Floyd) Baker.

He was a WWII veteran of the Air Corps and 4th Armor division. He was a well-loved pastor to many from 1950 to 1990. He was responsible for planting and nurturing many church bodies during that time, including Hagerstown Bible Church.

Pastor Baker was a member of the Church of the Open Door, Westminster.

He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia L. and Richard E. Goodwin of Westminster; a son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Ernest H. Jr. and Rose Marie Baker of Acton, Calif.; a son and daughter-in-law, Timothy H. and Betty Baker of Chambersburg, Pa.; one brother, Herman Baker of Fanettsburg, Pa.; one sister, Verna Wagaman of Fayetteville, Pa.; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.


He was predeceased by his wife, his father and mother, two sisters and four brothers.

Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro, Pa., and from 10:30 a.m. until noon on Wednesday, followed immediately by a funeral service at Church of the Open Door, 550 Baltimore Blvd., Westminster.

The burial will be at Strang's Cemetery, South Mountain, Pa.
