A state prison inmate scheduled to be released later this month will instead spend another six months behind bars for assaulting a correctional officer according to the terms of a plea agreement reached Monday morning in Washington County Circuit Court.
Karl Berrain, 26, an inmate at Maryland Correctional Institute, entered the plea before Judge W. Kennedy Boone III. Assistant State's Attorney Gina Cirincion said Berrain was serving time for a violation of probation on a conviction of assault and narcotics distribution.
Berrain was in handcuffs and being returned to his cell from a medical appointment when the incident occurred on Sept. 27, 2008, according to the application for statement of charges. As Berrain was being taken back to his, cell he made threatening remarks to the two correctional officers escorting him, the application stated.
Once in his cell, Berrain turned around and spit on the face of one of the correctional officers, according to the application.
