FALLING WATERS, W.Va. - James H. Hawvermale, 58, of Falling Waters, W.Va., died Tuesday, March 30, 2010, while vacationing in Puerto Rico.

He was born in Florida, the son of the late Joseph R. Hawvermale, and Hettie Hawvermale, currently of Berkeley Springs, W.Va.

After graduating from West Virginia University, he was commissioned as a lieutenant in the Coast Guard. For many years, he worked in areas of disaster planning and emergency services. He then received both a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in nursing and, for the past 15 years, had been employed as a nurse practitioner for Drs. Newman, Wooster, Kass, Bradford, et el. He volunteered at the Community Free Clinic for 10 years.


Jim was a lover of the outdoors who enjoyed hiking, camping, biking, kayaking, cross country skiing and traveling. He was a member of the Sierra Club and the Rails to Trails Conservancy.

He is survived by his wife of 15 years, Pamela Peitz of Falling Waters; stepson, Barrett Peitz of Shepherdstown, W.Va.; his brother, Richard Hawvermale; mother, Hettie Hawvermale; and aunt, Flora Hawvermale, all of Berkeley Springs.

An outdoor celebration of Jim's life will be Saturday, April 10, at 1 p.m. for close friends and family at Belinda Springs Farm.
