Evelyn Mary McCarren, 93, formerly of 55 E. Washington St., Hagerstown, Md., and a resident of Fahrney-Keedy Home in Boonsboro, Md., died Saturday, Dec. 26, 2009, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Oct. 7, 1916, in Greencastle, Pa., she was the daughter of the late William and Mary Hammil College.

She was a graduate of Greencastle High School, class of 1935.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 31 years, Louis McCarren, on Aug. 18, 1971; and her daughter, Theresa, in 1957.

Evelyn retired in 1979 from E.J. Fennel.

She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Sodality of Catholic Women.

She loved reading, exercise and spending time with her family. She was an avid gardener, and every weed and rock she attacked with great vigor.

She is survived by one daughter, Sylvia Sharpe and husband, Jim, of Michigan; one son, Patrick McCarren and wife, Penny, of Hagerstown; her precious grandchildren, Sean McCarren, Jamie Sharpe, Kerry Sharpe Engle, Kearse and Danielle Lowe, and Ian and Joshua Harshman; eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Erma Shoemaker of Chambersburg, Pa.; two brothers, David College of Lufkin, Texas, and Harvey College of Greencastle, Pa.; and many loving nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Louise Diehl and Clara Diehl; and three brothers, Boyd, Calvin and Paul College.

Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. George Limmer will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m.
