Devils, Wildcats leave no doubts in Doub openers

December 29, 2009|By TIM KOELBLE

WILLIAMSPORT -- Williamsport and Greencastle-Antrim stormed past their opponents on Monday night in the 29th annual Richard E. Doub Classic.

Shortly after Greencastle rocked Mountain Ridge with a strong finish to win 61-48, Williamsport followed with a quick start on the way to a 63-47 victory over Broadfording Christian.

Williamsport and Greencastle play for the title at 7, following the Broadfording-Mountain Ridge consolation game at 5. Greencastle won the Doub in 2005 and 2007 and Williamsport has not won the title since 1996.

"We knew how scrappy (Broadfording) was but we came out ready to play and with intensity," said Williamsport coach Scott Mowbray.

Despite a 10-day layoff between games, the Wildcats (6-0) forced Broadfording (7-3) into four early turnovers. Xavier Green scored six points and Casey McKenrick four for a quick 10-1 lead.

Then, Connor Arnone struck for three straight baskets off another batch of Lions turnovers. It wasn't until 1:01 showed on the clock that Broadfording hit its first basket -- a 2-pointer by Iver Silva as Williamsport led 18-3 at the first break.

"We delivered the first blow with our defense and they never really recovered," said Mowbray.

Broadfording, which hit 27 percent from the floor in the first half, missed two early layups and that seemed to set the tone for the Lions. They ended with 27 turnovers, nine in the first quarter.

"We obviously did not execute," said Broadfording coach Burnie Clutz. "It was a dreadful performance. It's one thing to get beat, but another thing to get beat without intensity and focus."

Williamsport led 34-14 at halftime and led by as much as 25 points (56-31) early in the final quarter.

Even though the Wildcats shot 25 of 52 from the floor, Mowbray wasn't satisfied and especially with a 16-for-27 effort at the stripe.

"I don't know if it was a reflection of the inactivity, but we didn't shoot well," he said.

The Wildcats had three players in double figures, led by Arnone's 13. McKenrick and Sefer Pllana each had 10 points. Green and Brandon McCauley each scored nine, with Green and Arnone each adding five assists.

Josh Smith came off the bench to lead Broadfording with 12 points.

In the opener, Greencastle and Mountain Ridge were locked in a 43-all tie with 3:57 left after the Miners scored five straight points.

After a timeout, Greencastle (3-1) effectively executed an inbound play with a Jared Grove scoring. That fueled a 14-0 run for the Blue Devils, including a pair of buckets by Christian Hoover and five free throws from Jerrick Gembe to open a 57-43 lead.

It was a good finish to an ugly beginning for the Blue Devils.

"Let's go, and wake up," Greencastle coach Garon Gembe exalted his troops in the first quarter.

After hitting only two first-quarter baskets, the Blue Devils charged to a 26-23 halftime lead and stayed out front the rest of the way.

"The inbound play was a big play," said Gembe. "We had some holiday blues, but finally started to execute. It wasn't pretty but we had some tough-minded kids out there."

Nathan Pool drained three 3-pointers and led Greencastle with 16 points. Hoover added 14, including a pair of treys. Pool also had seven rebounds.

Daniel Strietbeck led Mountain Ridge (2-4) with 19 points.
