An evergreen hedge has been planted and the brick pathways have been laid for the Hendershot Memorial Garden at the Western Maryland Hospital Center, said Will Godwin, volunteer garden auxiliary chairman.

The garden auxiliary group is creating the garden in memory of N. Linn Hendershot, a former Hagerstown City Council member and Western Maryland Hospital Center employee who died in 2008.

The pathways feature 53 engraved bricks, purchased as memorials for $100 or $200 each, Godwin said. The sale of memorial bricks raised about $6,000 for the garden, he said.

Washington County Board of Education member Donna Brightman, who has a landscaping business, donated the labor to install the bricks, Godwin said.

The next step for the garden will be to install memorial benches, Godwin said. Other work includes planting flowers and ornamental trees and installing a fence with an arbor.

"We've got a ways to go yet, but we're really pleased how many people have jumped in and pitched in," Godwin said.
