December 27, 2009

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) -- Greivis Vasquez scored 26 points, Landon Milbourne had 19, and Maryland improved to 6-0 at home with a 72-59 victory over Florida Atlantic on Sunday.

It was the third straight game in which Vasquez reached the 20-point mark. The senior guard went 12-for-20 from the field, had eight rebounds and five assists to help Maryland (8-3) to its fourth win in five games.

The Terrapins played without second-leading scorer Sean Mosley, who has a sprained left ankle. The sophomore forward participated in warmups and dressed for the game but did not see action for the first time in his career.

Ray Taylor, a 5-foot-6 freshman, scored 16 points and Greg Gantt added 14 for Florida Atlantic (5-7). Brett Royster had 14 rebounds to help FAU finish with a 49-45 advantage on the boards.

It was the Owls' third straight game against high caliber competition. Florida Atlantic lost 87-69 to Miami on Dec. 19 and 77-60 at Georgia on Wednesday. Florida Atlantic, of the Sun Belt Conference, is coached by former George Washington and St. John's coach Mike Jarvis.

After the Owls used a 10-2 spree to cut an 18-point deficit to 52-42, baskets by Milbourne, Vasquez and freshman center Jordan Williams put Maryland up by 16 with 10:41 left.

A 3-pointer by Taylor made it 63-54, but a layup by Milbourne and two straight baskets by Vasquez enabled the Terrapins to coast to the finish.

Maryland limited the Owls to 30 percent shooting and forced 11 turnovers in going up 39-27 at halftime.

There were four ties and five lead changes in the early going before Dino Gregory hit a jumper to spark an 11-0 run that put the Terrapins ahead to stay. A 3-pointer by Eric Hayes made it 18-13, and Vasquez scored twice in the lane before Milbourne capped the surge with a dunk.

After Taylor ended the Owls' drought with a jumper, Maryland used a 7-0 burst to go up by 16.
