Truck driving program at HCC gets new vehicle

December 26, 2009

Hagerstown Community College recently expanded its commercial vehicle transportation program through the purchase of an additional Volvo VN670 tractor from Truck Enterprises Inc. in Hagerstown.

"We have the largest community college program in the state of Maryland," said John Cavey, coordinator of the commercial vehicle transportation program at HCC. "We graduated 154 students last year and expect that number to continue to grow. With the purchase of this new truck, we now have the capacity to serve even more students."

HCC currently has three tractor-trailers it uses for truck driver training, as well as one leased truck from D.M. Bowman Inc. The addition of a fourth truck, which like the others has been specially modified for training purposes, will allow HCC to take more students into the program.

According to Cavey, HCC's truck driving program has grown by more than 13 percent in the last year and a half, which is due to the support the program has received from local trucking companies such as D.M. Bowman Inc., Hoffman Transport Inc., USA Cartage Inc. and Truck Enterprises Inc., as well as HCC's partnership with Volvo Powertrain North America.
