Drawbaugh conducts Santa Paws project to help animals

December 25, 2009

It's the season of giving and David Drawbaugh, 13, wants to make sure that includes everyone, even those with fur and four legs. David recently made a donation of various pet items to the Humane Society of Washington County collected during his "Santa Paws" project.

David was inspired to collect items after seeing a commercial on television depicting homeless pets.

"I felt really bad for them and thought that they deserved more. They're alone at the holidays and I wanted to make them happy by giving them their own Christmas gifts," David said.

This is the second year for his collection. His mother, Julie, helped him choose the name for the project after reading a book titled "Santa Paws."

Collection boxes wrapped like gifts were placed in Boonsboro Elementary, Boonsboro Middle and Boonsboro High schools for a week and a half. Washington County Technical High School made signs that were placed on the boxes and at various locations in the schools. Students, teachers and staff at the schools contributed to the collection.

"Last year, I only put the boxes in the middle school and was excited to have it in three schools this year," David said. "I look forward to doing the same project next year."

The Humane Society is at 13011 Maugansville Road in Hagerstown. Call 301-733-2060 or go to www.hswcmd.org for information on animal-related issues, directions to the shelter and information about programs and services.
