Mail Call

December 25, 2009

"There have been several calls recently questioning the name 'Meritus' for the new hospital. I also agree that this name is inappropriate and unnecessary. And there are other questions and possibilities. ... Since the name 'Washington County Hospital' won't apply to the old facility once the new one opens, what is wrong with just transferring the same name? It doesn't really need any other name. So why do the alleged 'powers that be' think they need to create more change and confusion in our lives?" - Washington County

"This is to the Maugansville caller saying that the Republicans passed Medicare and Social Security. You better check your history books. You obviously weren't old enough to remember, but I was. I was a teenager in the '60s. LBJ, a Democrat, pushed to have civil rights and Medicare passed. So your history is wrong, sir or ma'am, and it was the Democrats that got these social ... because Republicans, from the beginning of time, have always been for the rich and that's the way it is. Sorry." - Falling Waters, W.Va.

"On Tuesday, Dec. 22, 'Nice day for a white wedding': Absolutely beautiful photograph. I hope they have happy, happy, happy lives together." - Hagerstown

"I was reading the story about Faith, the miracle dog, in ... the 22nd of December's paper. That's such an inspiration to people all over, whether you have a disability or are an animal lover and all. It just makes you think, and makes you think of others less fortunate and all, and how determined that dog is, and give credit, and how we should be thankful and think of other people and animals and all, too, because we all have something special to offer one another. And with the season of Christmas, that's what it's all about." - Hagerstown

"Once again, I see the Washington County school system doesn't have the sharpest pencils in the bunch. I don't know why they wait until the last minute to close school. Some people work, and they have to do things with their children, and if you wait until the last minute, it makes it twice as hard." - Hagerstown

"This week, in a federal building in Washington, D.C., the president and his family attended the program that included Christmas carols. So why can't they have a program in our schools? Why can't they have a Christmas program in our schools?" - Hagerstown

"I'm a Democrat, and in regards to the article in the paper about the Democrats being scared of Sarah Palin, Sarah Palin couldn't even carry Hillary Clinton's pocketbook." - Williamsport

"On Downsville Pike, we're just calling to find out who we contact. This is twice now that our mailbox - and I see all the way down Downsville Pike the mailboxes have been, like, plowed down, and I was just wondering who we can contact. I mean ... the top was sheared right off, not once but twice, and it's back far enough off the road, and I was just wondering who out there that we can contact." - Hagerstown

"I'm calling in response to the call from Rohrersville, that they had caught eight stink bugs last week. We catch that many before noon every day." - Myersville, Md.

"Does health care work like uninsured motorists? Everyone pays. We pay for someone that likes to spend their money on other things, and let the working people pay their way. One more thing: I'd like Maryland to get the same deal as Nebraska." - Hagerstown

"I am not defending Dels. Myers and Serafini, but my husband worked for the railroad, and he could not retire after 30 years with benefits. When he did retire after 40-plus years, we pay all supplemental and Medicare and Medicare-D prescription payments. Why should state employees be any different, when their income is probably the same or more?" - Hagerstown

"If you want to see a beautiful Christmas decoration, ride down Greenberry Road. If you think the one in Chambersburg was pretty, wait until you see the one on Greenberry Road in Hagerstown, Md." - Hagerstown

"I think these guys running around with these snow plows on the front of their vehicles should do their neighbors and their friends and all, everybody in the Hancock area, a good deed by cleaning out the parking areas on the side streets and all. That would be a good way of saying 'Merry Christmas' and being a good neighbor. Merry Christmas." - Hancock

"When a local government offers ideas to cure budget problems to a governor, they should see to it their own local government who keep throwing and spending taxpayer dollars foolishly, then want to drop state employees' jobs. Fine, so long as it's excess at the top first. You might find that they stop wasting tax dollars - yeah, right. Don't you people know that higher-ups are the overspent dollars, spending your dollars?" - Falling Waters, W.Va.
