Humane Society names winners of holiday raffles

December 25, 2009

The winners of the Humane Society of Washington County's two holiday raffles have been announced. Bob Walton won the dog prize and Rachel George won the cat prize. Both accepted their prizes at the shelter Dec. 21.

Each was surprised with the news they had won. "No way!," said George. "I really wanted to win this incredible cat tree and this is just great." The cat tree was a one-of-a-kind, custom- designed tree.

Walton was taken aback when he heard the news he had won the dog raffle. "I had forgotten about the raffle. I just bought a ticket to help support the Humane Society. I didn't really think I would win it." The timing is good for his family. "We are planning to get a dog the beginning of the year, so now we are all set with goodies for our new family member." The coated wire crate contained a variety of dog-related items.

Initiated by the shelter's customer service department, the raffles were a success.

"We did this last year and had a good response, so we thought we would try again this year," said Meredith Pribble, a customer service representative.

"This was very well received," said Julie Cortino, customer service supervisor. "It was a real win-win because Ms. George and Mr. Walton are ecstatic with their prizes, and the animals benefit from the $521 raised by the raffles."

Paul Miller, executive director of the shelter, was pleased. "This is another example of how the residents of Washington County continue to help the shelter," Miller said. "It is really nice that during these difficult financial times, we continue to receive assistance from the community."
