James Everett Barnhart Sr., 88

James Everett Barnhart Sr., 88, of Martinsburg, went to be with the Lord Sunday, Dec. 20, 2009, at City Hospital.

Born June 9, 1921, in Berkeley County, he was the son of the late George Peter Barnhart and Vernie Lorena Murphy Barnhart.

He retired from E.I. DuPont after 27 years of service. After retirement, he started farming, raising sheep, cattle and turkeys. Later, with his son, Roger, he worked at Barnhart's Markets as vice president.

He was a member for more than 50 years at Bethel Assembly of God Church, where he served 30 years as general treasurer, deacon and various other offices.


He is survived by his wife of 68 1/2 years, Margaret Pittman Barnhart; one daughter and son-in-law, Mildred and Harry Strickland of Ocala, Fla.; three sons and daughters-in-law, Roger and Shirley Barnhart of Martinsburg, Joseph L. and Pam Barnhart of Kansas City, Kansas, and James E. and Colleen Barnhart of Martinsburg; 10 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandsons; one sister, Imogene F. Canby of Martinsburg; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Sherman G., Bruce, George and Herbert Barnhart, and two sisters, Ethel L. Keesecker and Rosalie Barnhart.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2009, at Bethel Assembly of God Church with the Rev. Arnold Brown, Pastor Ralph Campbell II and the Rev. Steve Strickland officiating. Interment will be held at Pleasant View Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Brown Funeral Home.
