JAN. 11, 1948-DEC. 22, 2009

FROSTBURG - Kathy Ann Powell, 61, of Frostburg, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2009, at the Frostburg Village Nursing Care Center.

Born Jan. 11, 1948, in York, Pa., she was the daughter of Ann E. (Wentz) (Street) Webster of Laguna Beach, Calif., and the late Col. Lewis C. Street Ill, USMC (Ret.). She was also preceded in death by her brother, John Street.

Mrs. Powell was a retired registered nurse who concluded her nursing career at Frostburg Village in 2004. Responding to her childhood calling to be a nurse, she was a "Candy Striper" volunteer as a teenager. Following graduation from Annandale High School (Va.) in 1966, she entered the nursing program at the University of Maryland. After a year at Maryland, she transferred to the Alexandria Hospital School of Nursing in Virginia, graduating in 1971. During her 22 years of nursing, she cared for people in hospitals, clinics and nursing homes on both the East and West coasts. But her primary nursing specialty was geriatrics, as she had a heartfelt burden for the elderly.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband of 40 years, Captain David L. Powell, USCG (Ret.) of Frostburg; three daughters, Jamie A. Powell and fianc Gary Blickenstaff of Hagerstown, Wendy M. Boslet and husband Steve of Baldwinsville, N.Y., and Brandy M. Jefferson and husband Scott of Fairfax, Va.; two grandsons, Kenneth Showe and Jack Boslet; and one granddaughter, Campbell Boslet; one sister, Nancy James of San Clemente, Calif.; and several nieces and one nephew.

Kathy worshipped her Lord and God at Cumberland Bible Church and was formerly a member at Eckhart Baptist Church, Cornerstone Baptist Church and Welch Baptist Church.

Friends will be received at the Durst Funeral Home, P.A., 57 Frost Ave., Frostburg, on Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. Don Harrelson and the Rev. Matt Eichhorn officiating.

Interment will be in the Frostburg Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Gary Blickenstaff, Steve Boslet, Scott Jefferson, Kenneth Showe, Jeff O'Connell and Chuck Rase. Honorary pallbearers will be Willard Harvey and Harvey McKenzie.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Frostburg Village Nursing Care Center, One Kaylor Circle, Frostburg, MD 21532.

Kathy, as a Christian nurse, was the embodiment and personification of A.H. Lawrence's "To Be a Nurse":

To be a nurse is to walk with God

Along the path that the Master trod.

To soothe the sorrow of human pain,

To faithfully serve for little gain.

To lovingly do the kindly deed,

A cup of water to one in need.

A tender hand on a fevered brow,

A word of cheer to the living now;

To teach the soul through its body's woe,

Ah! This is the way the Lord would go.

Oh gentle nurse with heart so true,

The Great Physician works through you!

While we greatly miss our kind, loving Kathy, we who remain and live in Christ have great comfort in knowing she is in paradise with Jesus and we will be reunited with her soon ... (I Thess. 4:13 - 18).
