Greencastle's pressure too much for Maidens to handle

December 23, 2009|By DAN KAUFFMAN

WAYNESBORO, Pa. -- Waynesboro girls basketball coach Doug Stuart was treated to an episode of "Fear Factor" by his team Tuesday night. Unfortunately, he couldn't change the channel.

Greencastle-Antrim pressured the Maidens into 36 turnovers, leading to 18 more shot attempts, and that was the main difference in the Blue Devils' 55-40 victory.

"A lot of them were unforced," Stuart said of the turnovers. "How many times did we throw the ball just to get rid of it? It's that fear factor. They want to throw the ball as soon as they get it."

Greencastle (2-1) forced Waynesboro (0-5) into 12 first-quarter turnovers and scored the game's first seven points before the Maidens got within five at 13-8 on Erin Taylor's 3-pointer with 10 seconds left in the frame.

The Blue Devils pulled away in the second quarter with an 11-2 run capped by Jenna Crunkleton's triple for a 26-14 lead with 3:18 left in the half. Crunkleton scored 11 points in the first half and a game-high 16 overall.

"She's got the ultimate green light," Greencastle coach Brad Rideout said. "Offensively, she's got to be aggressive, look for her shot and have confidence. One thing I was impressed with is she put the ball on the floor and created her offense."

Greencastle opened the second half with a 12-5 run -- Caitlyn Hoover scored all six of her points in the spurt -- for a 40-24 lead with 4:46 left in the third quarter. The lead grew to as many as 20 points in the fourth.

Tache Smothers had 10 points and five assists for the Blue Devils, and she played tough defense on Waynesboro point guard Dani Miller.

"Defense was the key," Rideout said. "I wanted to start with pressure and keep it on in the halfcourt. It started with Tache on Miller and we wanted to contest everything."

Katrina Wright had nine points and eight rebounds, Hoover finished with six points and five steals, and Alex Nicastro added five rebounds for Greencastle. The Blue Devils made 20 of 64 shots (31 percent).

Miller finished with 10 points and three assists, Amanda Gray had seven points and 10 rebounds, and Chargi Bennett added five points and six rebounds for the Maidens. Waynesboro made 13 of 46 shots (28 percent) and held a 42-40 edge in rebounds.

"We played well underneath, had a lot of rebounds, but we're young and raw and trying to improve day by day, step by step," Stuart said.
