HANCOCK - Mary E. Powers, 93, formerly of Hancock, Md., and a resident of Coffman Nursing Home, Hagerstown, Md., passed away Dec. 19, 2009, at the nursing home.

Born in Hancock, Sept. 17, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Edward P. and Cora (Hill) Fost of Hancock.

She was a 1935 graduate of Hancock High School and received her registered nursing degree from Church Home Hospital in Baltimore in 1939. Mary was employed as a registered nurse at the Congressional Manor Nursing Home in Bethesda, Md., the medical practice of pediatrician Dr. Emily Black, Bethesda, and as a nursing supervisor at the Hebrew Home of Greater Washington, Rockville, Md., where she retired from her nursing career in the early 1980s.


She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles H. "Nuppie" Powers; brothers, Edward Fost, William "Bill" Fost, Mark H. Fost and Herbert T. Fost; and sisters, Moynelle (Fost) Smith and Dorothy V. Fost.

She was a member of the Hancock Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by her children, Mary Beth Truax, Big Pool, Md., Dottie Powers-Fonseca, Maui, Hawaii and C. Rob Powers, Gaithersburg, Md.; sister, Betty (Fost) Baker of Bel Air, Md.; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
