Capitol Theatre 'Be a Star!' campaign at nearly 90 percent of goal

CHAMBERSBURG, PA. -- A "Capitol" campaign under way in Chambersburg is $13,000 short of its goal with a week to go.

The Capitol Theatre Center's annual "Be a Star!" campaign is scheduled to wrap up Dec. 31. Almost $112,000 has been raised toward the $125,000 goal set in October, theatre officials said.

"Ticket sales never cover all of our expenses. ... We prefer to keep our tickets reasonable," Manager Linda Boeckman said.

Tickets would be $50 to $100 for events if they were to cover expenses, Boeckman said. Instead, the theater relies on "an extremely loyal and strong foundation," she said.

The successes of that foundation show the community believes the theater on South Main Street is important for keeping downtown active, according to Boeckman.

Utilities average $3,000 a month, not including fuel used in the winter.

Boeckman said theater officials are still finalizing the schedule for 2010, but some highlights promise to be "Druid, featuring the Three Irish Tenors" and "Route 66" a 1950s music revue. The movie "White Christmas" played Wednesday afternoon.

Long-term goals include rehabilitating the theater's facade and obtaining one style of chairs, instead of the two kinds used now, Boeckman said.

Tax-deductible gifts by credit card are accepted. Checks can be made payable to "Capitol Theatre Center Foundation" and mailed to Capitol Theatre Center at 159 S. Main St., Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

Online donations can be made at, where donors will see a "donate" button.
