LANCASTER, Pa. - John K. Shoemaker, age 86, of 76 River Bend Park, Lancaster, and formerly of Chantilly Court, Hagerstown, died at 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 18, 2009, at Lancaster General Hospital.

Born Aug. 8, 1923, in Chambersburg, Pa., he was the son of the late Harvey and Viola (Wingert) Shoemaker.

He retired from Amtrak as vice president of operations of the Northeast Corridor.

John was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Sharpsburg, Md.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Harrisburg, Harrisburg Consistory and Zembo Shrine.

John also was a member of the Sharpsburg Lions Club.

He enjoyed collecting train memorabilia and golfing.

He was a graduate of Harrisburg High School and MIT with a degree in electrical engineering.

John was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy


He and his wife, Elizabeth (Kershner) Shoemaker, were married June 16, 1984, in Hagerstown.

Surviving family in addition to his wife are one daughter, Cynthia Mae Rossi of Lancaster, Pa.; two stepgrandchildren; and five stepgreat-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty (Werner) Shoemaker.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Dec. 23, at 11 a.m. from Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle, with the Rev. John Allfriend officiating.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given in his memory to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 209 W. Main St., Sharpsburg, MD 21782.
