Merry Christmas

To all my readers, family and friends - may you have a very Merry Christmas.

Local pageants seeking contestants

The Board of Directors of the Miss Washington County/Miss Western Maryland Scholarship Foundation is extending an invitation to area young women between the ages of 13 and 24 to compete in their upcoming annual production and competition.

Many scholarships and gifts will be awarded.

The event will be held Saturday, Feb. 20, at 7 p.m. at Kepler Theater on the campus of Hagerstown Community College.

Four winners will be selected: Miss Washington County 2010 and Miss Western Maryland 2010 and their teen counterparts, Miss Washington County Outstanding Teen 2010 and Miss Western Maryland Outstanding Teen 2010.

The winners will represent the four-county area in the annual Miss Maryland Scholarship competition and the Miss Maryland Outstanding Teen competition at The Maryland Theatre in Hagerstown in June.

In order to compete for the Western Maryland titles, a contestant must live, work or attend school in Garrett, Allegany, Washington, or Frederick counties.

In order to compete for the Washington County titles, a contestant must have been a Washington County resident for the past six months.

The five areas of competition are interview, eveningwear, physical fitness in swimsuit for Miss, physical fitness in sportswear for teens, on-stage question and talent.

There is no entrance fee for the Miss pageants and a nominal fee for teens.

The Miss competition is for women ages 17 to 24 and at least a high school senior. The teen competition is for those 13 to 17, but not a high school senior.

All interested contestants will be required to attend an orientation Saturday, Jan. 9, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Plaza Hotel near Valley Mall. Parents are welcome to attend. Professional photos will be taken at 8:30 a.m.

The competition is part of the Miss America Scholarship Program and Miss America Outstanding Teen Program, which is the largest source of scholarships for young women in the world, last year awarding more than $45 million on the local, state and national levels.

Those interested in either competitions are urged to contact Barbara Carson at 301-733-6340, Denise Apple at 304274-2346 or Sandy Miller at 301-791-5974 as soon as possible for more information and to register for orientation.
