Mail Call

December 21, 2009

"I just wanted to thank the Hagerstown Fire Department for the job they did at the sewing goods place, where the sign caught on fire. Because of their professionalism and their hard work, they had that scene completely in hand, and the store was able to open and go on with business as if nothing had ever happened. That's a wonderful, wonderful job."

-- Hagerstown

"Who cares what they name the new hospital, as long as we get a modern, up-to-date hospital?"

-- Keedysville

"I suggest that the narrow-minded caller who claimed it's strictly a redneck mentality to tie up, neglect and abuse dogs, check out, for example, Animal Planet's Animal Cops series, and see that unfortunately, such treatment of dogs goes on all too often in cities such as New York and Detroit, not noted for their redneck population, and, in fact -- open your eyes, caller -- everywhere. So why can't you just overcome your prejudice?"

-- Frederick, Md.

"I was in a local pet shop and I was talking to some guy about my pet snakes I have. I have five of them, and some lady that wasn't even part of the conversation started going, 'Ooh, gross, you got snakes? You're a gross, disgusting person.' ... Well, my response to that lady is, she only fears what she doesn't understand. Snakes can be some of the most beautiful animals. But people don't take the time to get to know anything about them."

-- Hagerstown

"Are you bored in the winter? Then trying getting involved in taking care of outside birds, by hanging feeders and feeding them. They are a joy to watch, and you'll get to know each different bird. You feed them, and they show you their appreciation in their beauty and in their song."

-- Waynesboro, Pa.

"I'd like to see The Herald-Mail start a section in the Mail Call section that would be called 'Anonymous Claus,' and people with needs could write in to the Mail Call section and express their needs, and the people can anonymously help them out, whether financially or whatever the problem they may have. And that would be something that would continue through the year in these difficult times we're going through. Those that can help can help."

-- Williamsport

"Well, now that you've chased away a developer who wanted to build an upscale retail center on the Doub Farm, maybe you will get exactly what you didn't want instead. Gee, maybe ... cheap shopping junk stores. I would have really loved to have seen something nice in Hagerstown instead of more townhouses, more crime, etc. Aren't our schools crowded enough already?"

-- Hagerstown

"When people park in handicapped parking, they should be aware if they're next to the space where a van with a ramp opens up. I was at Robinwood yesterday, parked in such a place, and the car next to the ramp opening parked on the line, and when we opened up the ramp there was no way I could get my chair in. The place was very busy. ... Please be careful."

-- Hagerstown

"I'd like to respond to the lights at Byron Park. I'm a Williamsport taxpayer, and I like the lights being on all hours of the night, because not all of us are asleep at the same time, and I enjoy those lights being on 24/7, or whatever Williamsport decides to do with Byron Park. I am a taxpayer and I enjoy it, and it's the one time of the year that they can take my tax money as much as they want to, to pay the electricity."

-- Williamsport

"I have a question. Do the lumps of coal in my stocking count against my carbon footprint?"

-- Hagerstown

"Could somebody out there please enlighten me on the ... commercial, 'Pioneers, oh pioneers, go forth, my pioneers,' etc., etc. What is that all about? Is he quoting a poet or something, or is it just made up? Does anybody out there know? Gotta say, it's pretty catchy."

-- Hagerstown

"Today's letter to the editor by Nancy C. Boyer was excellent. The Herald-Mail should consider hiring her as a editorial or op-ed columnist."

-- Hagerstown

"We caught eight stink bugs last week, and I'm wondering if anybody can match that."

-- Rohrersville

"You put in there exactly what I said, but you did not put it all in. When I talked about the Bush and Katrina, I said that -- I said that Brad Pitt and some of his cronies was down there building the country, and if they can do it, why can't our government?"

-- Falling Waters, W.Va.

"Just thought I would comment to the person regarding 3 million government workers. We do not have the best insurance. We do not all get to retire after 20 years; most is 30 years. And finally, we did not get another raise. I have been working for the State of Maryland with a pay reduction for almost one year, along with additional furlough days. Let me see, what paycheck do I not want, to pay my bills? Guess this is my reward for 28 years of state service."

-- Hagerstown

"This is regarding the ... local man sentenced for child abuse. What is wrong with these judges? They give him 15 years and suspend all but seven of it. ... They need to lock him for 30 years."

-- Boonsboro
