How it works

Each month, The Herald-Mail publishes the findings of initial food establishment inspections by the Washington County Health Department. Food service facilities are inspected on a regular basis to make sure they are following the regulations that govern such establishments.

Location of establishments is Hagerstown unless otherwise noted.

Inspectors also conduct follow-up inspections and monitoring inspections, and investigate complaints and food-borne outbreaks.

Potentially hazardous food means any food rich in protein which will support the rapid growth and reproduction of food-borne disease microorganisms.

Inspections are conducted at restaurants, nursing homes, schools, grocery stores and other places that serve food, including those which are only temporary such as fairs and carnivals.

Critical violations such as contaminated or spoiled food, improper temperatures of foods, improper cooking, or no running water must be corrected immediately. Those items are marked with *.


Other violations must be corrected within 30 days. Follow-up inspections will be conducted as needed.

Those violations corrected on day of inspection are indicated as (corrected).

The following food service establishments were inspected by the Washington County Health Department in October 2009 and found to have critical violations that needed to be corrected immediately:

o Kmart, 1713 Massey Blvd. - * Refrigerated display case temperature at 50 degrees (corrected); Ceiling vent in women's restroom must be cleaned.

o Four States Christian Mission, 125 N. Prospect St. - * Two dented cans (corrected); must clean hand sink, white plastic area in ice machine, scoop in drawer, and inside of microwave; need paper towels by hand sink; proper setup of three-compartment sink needed to wash, rinse and sanitize because dishwasher not heating to temperature needed to sanitize; must replace cardboard lining in utensil drawer with shelf or contact paper; improper storage of utensils in drawers.

o Texas Roadhouse, 120 S. Edgewood Drive - * Two dented cans of tomato puree (removed); must repair reach-in cooler; must clean exhaust vent in men's restroom.

o Vesta, 2 S. Main St., Boonsboro - * Food product at less than 135 degrees (corrected); food product stored on floor of walk-in cooler and walk-in freezer.

o Cascade American Legion Post 239, 14418 MacAfee Hill Road, Cascade - * Three dented cans of pasta sauce stored with usable cans (corrected); must clean floor under equipment; light shield missing above stove; single-service articles unprotected; ice scoop unprotected; dishwasher at less than 160 degrees for washing and 180 degrees for rinsing.

o Starland Skate, 800 Park Road - *Two door refrigerator at 49 degrees (corrected).

The following food service establishments were inspected by the Washington County Health Department in October 2009 and found to have sanitation violations which must be corrected within 30 days:

o Dairy Queen/Orange Julius, 17301 Valley Mall Road - Hand sink needs resealing to wall; improper mop storage.

o Bavarian Pretzel Bakery, 17301 Valley Mall Road - Paper towels needed in a dispenser for hand sink in employee restroom; improper mop storage.

o Auntie Anne's, 17301 Valley Mall Road - Paper towels for hand sink in prep area need to be in a dispenser; metal part around inside of ice machine door and metal inside need to be cleaned; three-compartment sink needs to be resealed to wall; improper mop storage; no paper towels in employee restroom; unisex employee restroom needs covered trash can; no thermometer in Coke reach-in refrigerator; cabinet door under ice bin needs repair.

o AC&T, 1615 Wesel Blvd. - Top part of stainless steel on Coke products dispenser and ceiling vent in restroom must be cleaned; hand sink must be resealed to wall; must repair or replace broken ceiling tiles in storage area.

o Domino's Pizza, 17549 Virginia Ave. - Must clean ceiling vent by walk-in cooler (corrected).

o Chuck E. Cheese's, 17618 Valley Mall Road - Hand sink in dishwashing area slow to drain and needs resealing to wall; must clean handle of ice paddle, wall beside ice machine, three-compartment sink, and underneath part of handle used to open ice machine; handles of single-service utensils stored for service need to face same direction; Dumpster lid open; corner of base coving by doorway into dishwashing area needs repair.

o Sheetz, 17550 Virginia Ave. - Must defrost ice cream display case; must replace light in walk-in cooler; condensation buildup seen in walk-in freezer around electrical pipe and box; must clean floor under shelving in walk-in freezer and door gaskets in No. 2 Manitowoc freezer; must repair floor around men's toilet so it is smooth and easily cleanable.

o Sheetz, 100 E. Potomac St., Williamsport - Single-service coffee cups on display need tops covered (corrected).

o Volunteer Fire Company of Halfway, Md., 11114 Lincoln Ave. - Area behind three-compartment sink needs resealing to wall.
