Frederick Taylor Downs, 74, of 165 Chantilly Court, Hagerstown, Md., and formerly of Williamsport, Md., died Friday, Dec. 18, 2009, at Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown.

Born Oct. 7, 1935, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Thomas Allen Sr. and Catherine Matilda Taylor Downs.

He was a 1953 graduate of Williamsport High School and a 1957 graduate of Frostburg State College, Frostburg, Md.

He was employed by Washington County Board of Education as a teacher/administrator until retiring in 1987. He taught at Williamsport High School and North Hagerstown High School. He also served as an administrator at North Hagerstown High and South Hagerstown High. He was also employed by the Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau as an information specialist and also worked for the National Park Service at the Antietam Battlefield and C&O Canal during the summers when he taught school.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

He was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Williamsport.

He was also a member of Washington County Retired Educational Personnel Association, Washington County Friends of Education Exchange Club and BPO 378 Elks of Hagerstown.

Survivors include his wife, Rita Marie Salem Downs, whom he married June 14, 1970, of Hagerstown; one daughter, Therese A. Werneth and her husband, Carey, of Montgomery Village, Md.; two sons, Christopher S. Downs and his wife, Krista, of Williamsport, and Bradley T. Downs of Sparks, Md.; one sister, Mary C. "Susie" Kunkle and her husband, Noel, of Williamsport; one brother, Thomas A. Downs Jr. of Martinsburg, W.Va.; four grandsons, Skylar Werneth and Dylan Werneth, both of Montgomery Village, and Andrew B. Downs and Matthew C. Downs, both of Williamsport; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, James E. Downs.

The family will receive friends at Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St., Williamsport, Monday, Dec. 21, 2009, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. The funeral home will be open after 1 p.m. on Monday for the convenience of family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at the funeral home Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2009, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. W. Gregory Martin officiating. Interment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Williamsport.
