George Herman Hicks, 77

George Herman Hicks, 77, of 224 Division Ave., Hagerstown, Md., passed away, Thursday, Dec. 17, 2009, at Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown.

Born Wednesday, Jan. 13, 1932, in Cearfoss, Md., he was the son of the late Roscoe Herman Hicks and Helen Gould Byers Hicks.

He was employed with the National Park Service at the C&O Canal, retiring after 30 years of service. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a member of St. Matthew's United Methodist Church where he sang in the choir and served on numerous committees. He was also a member of B.P.O. Elks Lodge 378 and Dixon Troxell American Legion Post 211 in Funkstown.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Patricia Ann Hicks; two daughters, Brenda Ann Artz and husband, Gary, of Manchester, Md., and Barbara Alaine Reyda and husband, Steve, of Laurel, Md.; and three grandchildren, Megan Reyda, Tyler Reyda and Joshua Artz.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Annabelle Ridgely.

Services will be held Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown, with the Rev. Jerry L. Lowans officiating. Family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Dec. 21. Interment will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Matthews United Methodist Church, 443 W. Franklin St., Hagerstown, MD 21740 or to the John R. Marsh Cancer Center, 11110 Medical Campus Road, Hagerstown, MD 21742.
