Bulldogs' Puller named to W.Va. All-State first team

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Martinsburg junior Kam Puller was the only local player named to the West Virginia Class AAA All-State first team. He was selected as a punter.

The All-State selections were released Saturday by the West Virginia Sports Writers Association.

Martinsburg also had the area's only two second-team selections -- senior offensive lineman Jordan Domenico and junior defensive lineman Darren Arndt.

Martinsburg's Brandon Bishop and David Hammond, Musselman's Brandon Michael and Washington's Dylan Nick earned Special Mention honors.

Jefferson's Seth Wright, Martinsburg's Logan Jenkins and Musselman's Jesse Hanes and Ray Wisenburg earned Honorable Mention status.

Jerwick, Phillips, Shirk and Bowie win events

Several Washington County athletes placed in the top three in their events at the second Frederick/Washington County Developmental Meet of the season Friday evening at Hagerstown Community College.

In girls action, Smithsburg's Jonelle Jerwick won the pole vault at 10 feet, 2 inches, while Boonsboro's Megan Deckert was second (8-6) and South Hagerstown's Sarah England and Erika Gerhold tied for third (8-0).

North Hagerstown's Renee Phillips took first in the 55-meter dash (7.40 seconds) and second in 300 (43.37), while teammate Katie Ritter was second in the 55 (7.43). The Hubs also won the 4x200 relay (1:52.09), while Smithsburg was third (1:55.76).

Clear Spring's Paige Shirk won the shot put (37-9).

In boys action, Williamsport's Justin Bowie won the 55 hurdles (7.61), and the Wildcats got a second-place finish in the 4x800 (8:41.09).

Boonsboro got second-place finishes from Coby Gussio in the 300 (37.56) and Evan Moser in the 800 (2:09.04) and a third-place effort from Kenny Kopp in the high jump (5-10).

North Hagerstown got second-place finishes from Frederick Owusu-Ayim in the 55 dash (6.79) and Dominic Sink in the pole vault (13-0).

FREDERICK, Md. -- Colleen Costello had 16 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks, while Maggie Garvey added nine points and four assists for St. Maria Goretti (3-6) in a loss to Maryland School for the Deaf on Friday night.

James Buchanan 66, Waynesboro 46

WAYNESBORO, Pa. -- Kace Worrell scored a game-high 24 points to lead James Buchanan past Waynesboro in the Mid-Penn Colonial on Friday night.

Dylan Rhodes added 21 points for the Rockets (3-1, 1-0).

Derek Null had 14 points and C.J. Miller had nine points for the Indians (0-5, 0-1).
