SMITHSBURG -- Katie Sprecher, Elisa Owens and the rest of the Smithsburg girls basketball team made a loud statement in a key early-season MVAL Antietam clash against South Hagerstown on Friday night.

Sprecher scored 21 points, Owens added 17 and the Leopards' defense held the Rebels to 20 percent shooting in a 76-38 blowout.

Smithsburg (4-1, 2-0) scored the first 10 points of the game -- Sprecher and Emily Hargreaves each had four points in the run -- and rolled to a 25-6 lead after one quarter. Owens and Sprecher each had six points in the frame.

South Hagerstown (1-4, 1-1) found itself in foul trouble early. Luna Jefferson -- one-half of the Rebels' star senior duo along with Alex Silva -- picked up three fouls in the first five minutes and sat on the bench the rest of the first half. She fouled out in the second half without scoring a point. Emma Stahl and Destanie Agee also each picked up three fouls in the first half.

The Rebels made just 12 of 60 shots in the game. Many of those attempts were either blocked or altered by Smithsburg center Sara Rishell, whose presence defensively (seven blocks) and on the boards (nine rebounds) gave South fits.

Smithsburg used runs of 8-2, 5-0 and 7-0 in the second quarter to take a 45-16 lead before Silva's three-point play with 19.3 seconds left in the half made it 45-19 at halftime. The Leopards had runs of 5-0, 6-0 and 7-0 in the third quarter to increase the lead to 67-28.

Allie Nickels had seven rebounds, Taylor Belella had five assists and four steals, and Lexi Andrukat added five assists for Smithsburg.

Silva finished with 26 points and 12 rebounds for South, making eight of the Rebels' 12 field goals and going 8-for-8 from the foul line. Stahl had eight rebounds and Kayla Freeman added five rebounds.

Smithsburg finished 26-for-65 from the field and 19-for-33 from the foul line, while South went 12-for-18 from the charity stripe. The Rebels committed 27 turnovers to the Leopards' 15. Only five Rebels scored, compared to nine Leopards who made at least one field goal each.
