Mail Call

December 18, 2009

"In regards to LeRoy Myers' comments on state employees not deserving a cost-of-living raise, let him come down and work at the prison for the salaries that we make, for a year, and deal with the cuts that we have to deal with and furlough days that we have to deal with, and see how he likes that."

-- Hagerstown

"On Tuesday morning at about 8, I decided to call the health department to make an appointment to get an H1N1 flu vaccination. I ate my breakfast, watched TV, read the newspaper, took my medication, was put on hold, elevator music, put through to three or four different exchanges. The phone rang at least 25 times -- finally to be answered at 10 by someone saying all the positions and appointments had been filled. Our health department needs to get a better system of doing ... I'm sure I'm not the only one who's frustrated with our health system."

"The Washington County Health Department needs to shape up their call-in for the H1N1 flu shots. I started calling at 8, and at 10 all the spaces were filled, and all I got was a busy signal. What do they have, one person answering the phone?"

-- Washington County

"The letters to the editor about the water rate increases in Funkstown -- well, I hope you didn't read the paper today, because they're going to increase the water and sewer rates again, and Hagerstown raised theirs, and Funkstown's going to raise our property taxes. I've been here for 30 years. You know what? I'm outta here. I cannot afford to live here any longer."

-- Funkstown

"This is to the Falling Waters, W.Va., person who called in Monday. I don't mean this in any mean sort of a way, but the Republicans have offered several health plans that were more affordable than the one that the government's offering, and you can get it off of any Web site. Congressman Roy Blunt is one that offered a wonderful one. People, the Republicans want to keep people in their own insurance. They want to give them tax incentives, or make it cheaper for them to have insurance. And Falling Waters, forced government health care is communism. We are forced to have something that we don't want, and honey, it's not free. Nothing in this life is free."

-- Waynesboro, Pa.

"I'm calling concerning Tuesday, Dec. 15's paper, senior center funding. How ridiculous that anyone would consider spending $5.8 million on a senior center, when all the empty buildings -- the Lowe's building over in the plaza off of Wesel Boulevard would have been perfect. I for one would not attend it if I lived right on top of where they're planning on building it."

-- Clear Spring area

"Something needs to be done about the traffic pile-up on the intersection of Marsh Pike and Longmeadow Road. When you're heading north, the lines back up terribly long. They need to put a second lane in, or they need to adjust the timing of the lights. It's ridiculous. It's just no sense for traffic to back up so far. I don't know what changed all of a sudden, but the problem is dramatically worse."

-- Hagerstown

"I'd been down to see the beautiful Williamsport park, and leaving the park, I drove down Main Street and through the little town, and it's completely dark. There's no decorations on the lamp posts, no nothing. What has happened to downtown's decorations?"

-- Williamsport

"Like they said, make this everything positive from here on out through the Christmas season. This is to say thank you to the guys or girls or whoever cleaned up the sidewalks and the messes, the bottles and all that trash up there in Hancock on the exits and stuff. Have a merry Christmas and a happy new year."

-- Hancock

"I am a Democrat, and I'd like to reply to the lady or gentleman who called in from Falling Waters and said they're Republican. The question I have is, why is it, if in this bill, it says that if you don't buy the health care from the government, the government can take your home, all your property, put you in jail for five years, and then when you get out of jail they can fine you another $500 for every day you don't buy this insurance? Now where does that make sense to anybody, regardless if you're Republican or a Democrat?"

-- Falling Waters, W.Va.

"I'm just calling to say why don't they just name the Washington County Hospital the Hagerstown Hospital? Because it's in Hagerstown. Everybody goes by Hagerstown Hospital."

-- Hagerstown

"To state lawmakers: Suggestions for budget cuts: Get rid of all contract employees. Freeze political appointees' salaries at $75,000. Stop financing everything for commissions and study groups. Stop paying inmates to go to school. Cut off grant money, open space, etc., to counties and cities that do not cut their own spending. Start at the top with any further penalties for state employees. Don't enact any laws that have a price tag attached."

-- Williamsport

"Del. Myers says the state can save $240 million by laying off 400 state employees. Good idea, LeRoy, let's start with the senators and delegates."

-- Halfway
