Lions honored for community service

December 16, 2009

WILLIAMSPORT - Williamsport Lions Club members Bill Collins and Ed Hose received the Melvin Jones Fellowship for 59 years of community service, according to a club news release.

The men were recognized at the Nov. 12 club meeting at the Williamsport American Legion.

The fellowship is an honor that recognizes a donation of $1,000 to the Lions Club International Foundation or a person for whom a donation was made by others.

Donations to the foundation provide 70 percent of the foundation's annual revenue.

According to Lions Clubs International's Web site, the foundation supports the humanitarian work of Lions clubs.

Fellowship donations have helped SightFirst, a Lions initiative that helps restore sight to people through cataract surgeries, expanding eye hospitals and clinics, educating the public, distributing sight-saving medication, training eye-care professionals and establishing eye-care systems in underserved areas.

The men received a lapel pin, a plaque and a congratulatory letter.
