Rape charges dropped after victim does not report to hearing

Rape charges against a 53-year-old man were dropped Tuesday in Washington County Circuit Court after the victim did not report for the scheduled hearing.

Robert L. Mercer was charged with second-degree rape, second-degree sex offense and second-degree assault.

Assistant State's Attorney Christopher McCormack said the state will drop the charges, which stemmed from an incident that was alleged to have occurred Aug. 1.

Man sentenced after pleading guilty to second-degree assault

Jerry Wayne Pryor Jr. pleaded guilty Tuesday in Washington County Circuit Court to second-degree assault and was sentenced to serve two years in prison.

Circuit Judge Daniel P. Dwyer sentenced Pryor to seven years in prison, but suspended five years.

In exchange for the plea, the state dropped charges of conspiracy robbery, conspiracy assault, robbery, theft less than $500 and conspiracy theft less than $500.

Pryor was accused of robbing and assaulting a man May 6.
