Funkstown's veterans monument increased

December 15, 2009|By JULIE E. GREENE

FUNKSTOWN - The planned monument for Funkstown veterans from the Korean and Vietnam wars will be a little bigger than previously planned.

Town officials informally agreed at Monday night's town meeting to increase the size of the face of the monument to four feet in height, from three feet.

The larger size will accommodate more names, said Bill Osborne, who is spearheading the effort to rectify the absence of some veterans' names from a monument at Baltimore Street and Alt. U.S. 40.

Osborne said he has the names of 17 Vietnam War veterans and 12 Korean War veterans for the monument. It is for veterans from Funkstown or Election District 10.

The deadline to submit names passed last month, but Osborne said he has received a few more since then.

With the increased size comes a bigger price tag.

The cost went from $850 to $1,000, Osborne said. So far he has raised $600.

Osborne hopes to have the monument dedicated on Memorial Day. It is to be installed at the town monument.
