Cause of Gerrardstown house fire under investigation

December 15, 2009

GERRARDSTOWN, W.Va. -- The cause of a fire that destroyed a family's home Tuesday night near Gerrardstown is under investigation, South Berkeley Volunteer Fire Co. Chief Richard "Rick" Petry said.

The roof of the doublewide mobile home at 2287 Horners Sawmill Road was burned off when firefighters arrived, Petry said.

No one was at the home when the fire started, but a South Berkeley firefighter was taken to City Hospital in Martinsburg after twisting an ankle, Petry said.

Reported at 7:43 p.m., the blaze appeared to start in the living room area and windy conditions were probably a factor in fueling the fire, Petry said. Firefighters from Baker Heights and Back Creek Valley volunteer fire departments also responded to the blaze, Petry said.

The American Red Cross was being notified about the victims' loss, Petry said.
