Editor's note: The Herald-Mail invites readers to answer poll questions on its Web site, Readers also may submit comments when voting. A sampling of edited reader comments will run on The Herald-Mail's Opinion page on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday.

The question posted Friday on The Herald-Mail's Web site was: Do you think Meritus Regional Medical Center is a good name for the new hospital that is scheduled to open in about a year near Robinwood Medical Center?

Poll results:

Yes - 145 votes (13.2 percent)

No - 952 votes (86.8 percent)

o "I said yes only because it is a marketing name, which in theory will attract better doctors. We changed the name of Hagerstown Junior College to Hagerstown Community College for the same type of marketing principle - to attract better teachers."

o "I voted no, as I have not heard any reasoning for why the name was changed from Washington County Hospital to Meritus. What exactly is that supposed to mean?"

o "I think Meritus Hospital is ridiculous. Why not Verizon or M&T Bank Hospital? How about the Dr. Bowman, Bacon or Young Hospital? These were the pediatricians for anyone over 50 who grew up in Hagerstown. At least these names would have some meaning to the locals. I guess I'm just an old sentimental."

o "Meritus Regional Medical Center sounds progressive. I like it."

o "The name is dumb. It'll take 25 years until anyone consistently associates the name with the area."

o "I voted yes. In fact, if it was called Hope Hospital or pretty much any other name, I would have voted yes. What's in a name anyway?"

o "Call it what it is - Washington County Hospital."

o "Personally, I don't care what they name it as long as the wait in the emergency room is less than two hours and the quality of care improves."
