Morgan Co. BOE backs students in T-shirt tiff

December 14, 2009

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. (AP) - The Morgan County Board of Education has backed a group of high school students wearing T-shirts in favor of national health care coverage.

In a statement released Friday, Superintendent David Banks said the shirts fall within students' First Amendment right to free speech.

Del. Daryl Cowles, R-Morgan, raised questions about the Berkeley Springs High School students' shirts. Cowles said he was worried they were being manipulated by the group Single Payer Action, which produced the shirts.

Banks says students wearing shirts or buttons to support a cause is nothing new at county schools.

As long as students aren't disruptive, Banks says, there's nothing wrong with such actions.
