Mail Call

December 14, 2009

"I would like to challenge the readers of Mail Call to a week of positive remarks about our community during this holiday season. I will start with inviting everyone out to Longmeadow Road to see the flag at Centra Bank. It's beautiful."

- Maugansville

"I've noticed in the world today that if you're one of those people who gives a donation to certain charities in the county and area you live, people such as you reporters out there, along with other people, make those people out to be so great, treat them as a big hero, when in fact they're not. I mean, it must be a proven fact that money does talk today and all. I mean, which that's very true. Money is where the care is. I mean, you got money, you got care."

- Greencastle, Pa.

"I'm an older Avon lady who lives on Howell Road in Hagerstown. Someone took my Avon sign and the bracket that carries it. I would like it returned. I depend on it to supplement my income and I would very much appreciate if they'd bring it back, no questions asked. Happy holidays to you all."

"A very learned person once told me, always keep in mind that when government implies it is going to do great things for you, it is not a done deal. What government gives you, government can take away. Whatever the problem may be, follow the money. Lastly, always remember that our founding fathers created this government the way they did because they knew governments could not be trusted."

"I have a suggestion for the leaders of this country of ours. I think from the president on down to all his advisers and anyone who is involved with waging any type of war anywhere, they should be - before they are elected to office - they should be required to have some type of degree in history, especially U.S. history and military history, because our last several presidents, including our present president, don't have a clue."

- Hagerstown

"This is for our BOE, our elected officials at the board, and the County Commissioners. Dream along - that article on the 10th of December about the next seven years, to build six new schools for $161 million is about $27 million per school. With all these foreclosures, commercial real estate, taxes down, people out of jobs - dream along."

- Chewsville

"I think these scooters that are on the road now need to be tagged and licensed like every other vehicle. The way these people drive them is just like a motorcycle, and most of the people who own them are those who have lost their license for driving for some violation or another."

- Clear Spring

"I'm a Republican, been one for all my life. Why is it the Republicans don't want the health care bill? I'm a Republican that has no insurance. Why shouldn't I get affordable insurance? Why? You all are thinking about your pockets and your re-elections, and not about people like me. I think I'm changing parties. I'm tired of Republicans worrying about the rich."

- Falling Waters, W.Va.

"A poll showed yesterday that Americans had less trust in Congress than a used car salesman. Too bad they didn't see this before the election a couple years ago and last year's presidential election."

- Hagerstown

"I'm calling about the Washington County school system using its central calling for advertising, and to notify parents of other things for the school board. I got two calls this evening - one for the Williamsport Band Boosters, and the second one was for the Barbara Ingram School for the Arts, and I'm not interested in either of those items. They don't pertain to my students and the school system is not using this appropriately."

- Williamsport

"This is to the person whose cat was killed on Franklin Street. What they need to do is explain to their grandson why they let their cat run loose and didn't keep it indoors so it wouldn't get killed. And because they do not know if the person was really going too fast. It could have run right out in front of them."

- Greencastle, Pa.

"I see in Friday morning's paper, Dec. 11, Franklin County budget calls for tax hikes. So this is on tax hikes. All you people in Franklin County, you need to get on the commissioners. They're getting as bad as the County Commissioners in Washington County. All they want to do is raise taxes. This isn't a time to be raising taxes on people. What the commissioners need to do in Pennsylvania is they need to know how to make cuts on these administrative people and everybody else, you know, all the states making cuts, so it's time for the counties to make cuts, and that's what the State of Maryland is telling their city councils and county commissioners."
