Firefighters contain attic blaze in Pa.

December 13, 2009

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. -- In the midst of constant rain, Franklin County firefighters were able to quickly contain an attic fire Sunday in Chambersburg.

The fire started in the attic of a home at 711 Hillcrest Ave., near Franklin Street in Chambersburg, said Deputy Fire Chief Steve Himes, of the Franklin Fire Co.

Himes said the kitchen of the detached single-family home was destroyed, rendering the house uninhabitable.

Firefighters from numerous departments responded to the 11:44 a.m. call and were able to contain the fire within about 10 minutes. It was another hour before the structure stopped smoldering, Himes said.

The homeowner was home when the fire broke out, but no one was injured in the blaze, he said.
