Family and friends help Scout with Eagle project

December 12, 2009

Eagle projects are one of the last requirements needed for a Boy Scout to attain the highest rank in Scouting.

On Nov. 6, Andrew Meighen of Troop 14 in Smithsburg planned the planting of red oak and white trees in the East Woods of Antietam Ntional Battlefield. The project was done for the National Park Service to help restore the battlefield to its original landscape of the 1800s.

Members of Troop 14, family and friends helped dig holes, plant trees and spread mulch around the trees. The group of 26 volunteers planted more than 575 trees. Andrew's project was completed in 214 hours.

A plastic shield will be placed around the trees.

Troop 14 is sponsored by the Smithsburg Lions Club.
