Navy Seaman Apprentice Randy J. Saylor, son of Kelly D. Williams of Myersville, Md., and Gerald Kunde of Myersville, along with sailors and Marines from the Bataan Amphibious Ready Group (BATARG), Norfolk, Va., and 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), Camp Lejeune, N.C., recently departed the 5th Fleet and entered 6th Fleet's area of operations after traveling through the Suez Canal and entering the Mediterranean Sea. The BATARG is preparing to return to the U.S. as it nears the end of a six-month deployment.

Saylor is a 2008 graduate of Laurel Highlands Senior High School of Uniontown, Pa., and joined the Navy in August 2008.




Second Lt. Ryan A. Church, son of Steven Church of Hagerstown and Karen Lester of Hagerstown, was commissioned as an officer at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Ala. He was in the first class in the Academy of Military Science to be commissioned from this base, since it previously was held in Tennessee.

Church is a civil engineer attached to the 110th Fighter Wing in Battle Creek, Mich., and has served in the Air Guard for nine years.

Church is employed by General Motors in Detroit as a engineer with the Hybrid Division.

He is a 2000 graduate of Smithsburg High School.
